Your U.S. Car Insurance Does Not Work Here
September 2, 2026 · 7 min read

If you are thinking about living in Tijuana and working in San Diego, you will drive across. And the single most expensive mistake people make is assuming their U.S. auto policy follows them.
It does not.
Mexico does not recognize your policy
Your U.S. insurer is not licensed in Mexico and Mexican authorities do not accept the coverage. Some U.S. policies extend physical damage a short distance past the border — that is not the part that matters. Liability is the part that matters, and it does not cross.
You need a Mexican liability policy issued by a Mexican insurer. You can buy it online in minutes, by the day or by the year. Annual coverage is dramatically cheaper if you cross regularly.
Why this is different from a fender bender at home
In the U.S., a collision is a civil matter. You exchange information and the insurers argue.
In Mexico, a collision causing injury or significant damage can be treated as a criminal matter until responsibility and payment are resolved. Without valid Mexican liability coverage, the practical outcome can be that your vehicle is impounded and you are held while it gets sorted out.
That is the real reason to carry it. Not the deductible — the possibility of not going home that night.
Buy the policy with legal assistance included. The good Mexican policies bundle an adjuster who comes to the scene and a lawyer. On the day you need it, that service is worth more than the coverage limit.
Plates: yours or Mexican?
Both work, and the choice depends on your immigration status.
Keeping U.S. plates is what most cross-border commuters do at first. Simple, and it keeps the car legal on the U.S. side without paperwork.
⚠️ Be realistic about what that means day to day: a car with California plates in Tijuana is visible. Most people report no issues, but you will occasionally be stopped. Carry your documents, be polite, ask for the ticket in writing, and never hand over cash at the roadside.
Mexican plates require Mexican residency and importing or buying the car locally. That makes sense once you actually live here rather than commute.
The border is the real cost
The insurance is cheap. The wait is not.
Before you buy a house based on a commute, drive it on a weekday at the hour you would actually cross — not on a Sunday afternoon. The same trip can be twenty minutes or two hours.
Look into SENTRI, which is the difference between a predictable commute and an unpredictable one. It takes months, so start before you move, not after.
What we tell buyers
If your plan depends on crossing daily, test the commute before you choose the neighborhood. We would rather you buy the right house than the one closest to our office.
And get the Mexican policy before your first drive down — not after you find a place you like.
